Rapid-Response Unsaturated Zone Hydrology: Small-Scale Data, Small-Scale Theory, Big Problems

چکیده
The unsaturated zone (UZ) extends across the Earth’s terrestrial surface and is central to many problems related land water resource management. Flow of through UZ typically thought be slow diffusive, such that it could attenuate fluxes dampen variability between atmospheric inputs underlying aquifer systems. This would reduce vulnerability contaminants water-related hazards. Reducing or negating effect, however, spatially concentrated rapid flow transport surprisingly common becoming more so with increasing frequency magnitude extreme hydroclimatic events. Arising from wide range in rates complex modes nonlinear processes, these effects are among most poorly characterized hydrologic phenomena. Issues scale present additional difficulties. Equations representing processes have been developed tested on basis field laboratory measurements made at scales pore size plot size. In contrast, significant interest society, including floods, recharge, landslides, groundwater contamination, watershed regional scales. disparity our understanding for societal has spurred application model equations increasingly coarse resolutions over larger areas than can justified by existing theory. mismatch requires an assumption averaging diffusive preferential effectively represent influence both vast areas. Given currently inadequate recognition quantitative characterization focused flow, phenomena critically need expanded attention effort.

Peatland hydrology and carbon release: why small-scale process matters.
Peatlands cover over 400 million hectares of the Earth's surface and store between one-third and one-half of the world's soil carbon pool. The long-term ability of peatlands to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere means that they play a major role in moderating global climate. Peatlands can also either attenuate or accentuate flooding. Changing climate or management can alter peatland hydr...

Increasing population growth and decreasing land ratio made it difficult for rural people of Bangladesh to maintain their livelihood. Especially the small-scale farmers find it trickier using their scarce resources. One House One Farm approach(OHOF) is designed to utilize the house and farm resources of the small- scale farmers to improve their livelihood. The focus of the study was to determin...

Farmers frequently cope with risks due to the uncertainty of climatic conditions. Population growth, changes in agricultural policies, environmental regulations and the degradation of natural resources such as soil and water also present farmers with numerous challenges. Although farmers have experience in coping with a certain degree of uncertainty, increased climate variability and changes ma...
